Mariana’s Trench come to Pittsburgh

On Saturday February 6th, 2016 the guys from Mariana’s Trench came to the city with a crazy surprise. Not only were they playing in a reconverted church venue called Mr. Smalls, but the show actually SOLD OUT the evening prior.

For the first time coming to Pittsburgh, PA, Mariana’s Trench was definitely given a warm welcome.

And it didn’t stop there.

Fans flooded in early to VIP passes, to meet the band have a photo session. Then the real fun began when the General Admission was admitted, as the crowd grew to emass the venue.

Mainland, a band hailing from Queens, New York opened up the show at 8:00pm sharp to a sea of people in the sold out crowd. With an old school classic punk vibe, dancing and frontman Jordan Topf‘s unique vocals they pleased the crowd and gained some fans throughout their set. Songs such as “Outcast” showcase the band’s unique California punk sounds as well as their alternative roots, while “Not

As Cool As Me” has more of the New York grit and punk sound one would expect from the band. The combination of both unique sounds makes the band definitely one to watch in the future, and I was fortunate enough to see them live and have a great time.

The one downside of Mainland’s set was the set time… as the band only got to play for 30 minutes before packing up the stage to set up for Mariana’s Trench to come on at 9:00pm.

Mariana’s Trench opened up their set with the title track to their 2015 album, “Astoria”, getting the crowd involved the moment they walked on stage. With funny banter between songs, Josh Ramsay definitely made an impression on the crowd in Pittsburgh (there was a long conversation about the frontman’s infamously tight and low pants which was hilarious) and the crowd embraced these Vancouver natives with open arms. With much of the set being off the the newest album Astoria, some older favorites like “Fallout”, “Celebrity Status”, “Desperate Measures” and “Haven’t Had Enough” all made an appearance into the set, as well as many more.

Closing out the set with the phenomenal “End of an Era” was something dreams are made of, and the brillance of Mariana’s Trench harmonies. It was something I know I will never forget and the rest of the crowd that day in Pittsburgh would cherish forever.

After the show, the band even met fans outside, and defintely made their first time to Pittsburgh a memorable event for everyone involved, and Ramsay even said it himself, “We hope to be back very soon. This was incredible.”

It was something memorable to help close out the USA part of the tour before the band headed home to continue the HEY YOU GUYS TOUR in the home country of Canada.

Real Friends announce tour and sell out in 24 hours

Our favorites Real Friends had a big announcement. From teasing these past few months over various Facebook posts and social media shenanigans, it was here.

Real Friends announced an entire tour yesterday, playing in small venues where each show would sell 150 tickets for just $5.

And this sold out entirely in less than 24 hours of being on sale.

It’s fantastic to see Real Friends doing a tour like this, as it is very reminiscent of The Maine’s tour for ‘American Candy’ which was completely Free over the summer of 2015. Either way, Real Friends have got it made, and this tour will still be amazing for those luckily enough to snag a ticket!

What do you think about this apporach to tours? Should more bands do cheap tours? Sound off in comments below!

The Academy Is… Reunion Tour and 10 Year Anniversary of ‘Almost Here’

Last month’s news was a big one for fellow pop punkers, especially those who miss the early 2000’s days were Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco were kings alike and toured many a times alongside band, The Academy Is…

As during their set at Riot Fest in Chicago on Saturday, September 12th, The Academy Is… played through the entirety of 2005 ‘Almost Here’ album to a huge crowd.

As the band released an official statement about playing Riot Fest together online before the show back in May ;

Hello old friends,
We are pleased to announce that we will be reuniting the band for a our first show in many years. In September, we will come together for Chicago’s RIOT FEST in Douglas Park to perform our beloved debut album “Almost Here” in its entirety. This is a 10 Year Anniversary Show! This is a Reunion Show! This is a Farewell Show! We are extremely excited to take a trip down memory lane — in the city that we call home.

As the biggest surprise of the night was the next announcement, as frontman William Beckett announced the band would embark on an ‘Almost Here’ 10th anniversary tour kicking off this December, going into early 2016.

The lineup for this reunion tour is William Beckett on vocals, Mike Carden on guitar, Adam Siska on bass and Andy “The Butcher” Mrotek on drums. No word on if Ian Crawford from Never Shout Never will continue to fill in for ‘Almost Here’s era guitarist, Tom Conrad, throughout the tour, as the original guitarist parted ways with the band back in 2006 and did not play Riot Fest alongside the band.

This tour marks the first time the band has toured exclusively since late frontman, William Beckett leaving the band to pursue a solo music career back in early 2011.

“‘Around The World And Back’ is a song about commitment issues and finding a way to overcome them, live in the moment and embrace every opportunity at hand. It’s the first duet song we’ve ever done, and we’re very excited about it. Ansley’s voice is incredible and it’s very refreshing to hear the first female voice featured on a State Champs track.”
