ALBUM REVIEW : Good Tiger – We Will All Be Gone

Since their debut record in 2015, Good Tiger has been working hard to produce the follow-up sophomore release. Officially released this past week from Metal Blade Records, We Will All Be Gone was recently highlighted by Alternative Press as one of the “Most Anticipated” releases of 2018.

With the stunning debut of A Head Full of Moonlight in 2015,  the guys of Good Tiger have grown to craft their unique and contemporary sound in everything they do. Comprised of guitarists Derya “Dez” Nagle and Joaquin Ardiles, bassist Morgan Sinclair, drummer Alex Rudinger, and vocalist Elliot Coleman, Good Tiger has raised the stakes across the board as every track on We Will All Be Gone has a definitive character of its own.

With ten unique tracks, We Will All Be Gone takes the listener through the growth of Good Tiger as musicians and as artists defining themselves in the metal genre. The first track “The Devil Thinks I’m Sinking” kicks off the album, but I have to list “Nineteen Grams” ,”Grip Shoes”, “Cherry Lemon” and single “Salt Of The Earth” as the major stand out tracks.  While fitting into the genre, Good Tiger have the ability to pander to major audiences… as any listener who is a fan of rock, metal and even electronic influences could enjoy this record.

SPOTLIGHT : SCIENTIST

Diving deep into the metalcore scene of Chicago, I recently discovered SCIENTIST. SCIENTIST include guitarist/vocalist Eric Plonka, guitarist/vocalist Patrick Auclair, drummer Justin Cape, vocalist Barry Kotarba, and bassist Mathew Milligan and are currently gearing up for their third album release this spring and hails influence from the diverse comic book worlds of Grant Morrisson’s series, The Invisibles. The upcoming record titled Barbelith, details the ever-mystifying search for one’s self and the meaning of life, as the name hails from what is known as a “placenta” of human knowledge and connection in the comic book lore.

SCIENTIST spoke on the effort put forward for Barbelith, as it pushed the band musically to a new level and new experiences with production, “Barbelith will be our first record featuring a single, full-time vocalist, having historically opted for a mix of instrumental tracks and a revolving cast of guest vocalists. Barry Kotarba  was brought on board just a couple months before we began recording, and a series of synchronicities were gradually made evident to him the themes and ideas that would become Barbelith, one story of a single soul’s perspective within humanity’s search for truth and self.”

Barbelith is set to release on April 13, 2018 and is currently available for preorder online |Here|.

STREAM – Household “Dark Matter”

Natives of Minneapolis, Household ( vocalist and bassist Joshua Gilbert, drummer Matthew Anthony, and guitarist Nathanael Olsen) are eagerly awaiting the release of their upcoming record, Everything A River Should Be, due out later this month on February 23rd through Equal Vision Records. Showcasing their newest single “Dark Matter”, the single serves as an excellent preview of what is yet to come with the full release.

Household’s vocalists and bassist Joshua Gilbert speaks highly about the track, stating, “I feel like this song portrays the worst side of relationships gone bad. The idea of dark matter and black holes is that there’s a lot of mystery behind them, but we do know that they are distractive and pull things into themselves.”

Household will be touring in support of the new record this winter with Senses Fail, Reggie & The Full Effect, and Have Mercy. The run kicks off in Santa Ana on February 27th and concludes in Las Vegas on March 31st. For more tour dates check out Equal Visions webpage or the full list of dates below. Album Review : Capital North – “Sea to Sky”

Capital North’s EP Sea to Sky is a record that has something for every kind of listener.  Musicians Jonathan Farrar (Guitar/Vocals) and Anthony Zichella (Vocals), Capital North hail from Pasadena, CA and was formed after Farrar traveled the world for a year on a mission of soul searching while Zichella went on to graduate culinary school and pursue his passion as a chef, but both found their way back to music. Together, the duo have created a 6-track EP that discusses relatable topics from personal struggles like health, love, and loss to the human condition.

Kicking off the record comes “Sea”, an easy instrumental track that seamlessly flows into the high tempo and energetic “Broken Vessel”. Highlight tracks include the mesmerizing and haunting “For A Living”, which includes a heavy dose of guitars, some hardcore themes in breakdowns and a lot in energy on the first half of the record. Next up comes “Glass Houses”, which gives me a lot of good vibes, as I am a HUGE fan of melodic and absolutely powerful vocals. The chorus brings out a perfect blend of the heavy guitars and the vocals, which just makes for a really amazing track to listen to and jam out.

Closing out the record comes “Household Wards”, which slows things down from the previous fast tempo of the EP. The meaningful lyrics melded with the softer guitars really highlights “Household Wars”, allowing the track to stand out on the record, and I believe this will become a fan favorite. The closer, “Sky” blends a lot of the same post-hardcore melodies, and adds that final punch to create a lasting impact.

Overall, Sea To Sky is a really cool record for those who enjoy the post-hardcore/alternative scene. For the fans of bands such as Hands Like Houses, Palisades and even Silverstein… check out what Capital North has to offer.

You won’t be disappointed.

ALBUM REVIEW : RIVALS – “Damned Soul”

With 2018 underway, many of us music fans are eagerly awaiting new releases from many artists to fill the new year. Alternative band RIVALS have just released their new EP through Smartpunk Records entitled, Damned Soul. The record has many musical masterminds behind the production, such as by John Espy (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus) and Aaron Edwards (Sick Puppies, Elohim, The Cab), with additional writing for drums and mixing/mastering by Cody Stewart (The Browning, Rings of Saturn, Falsifier).

Gaining popular internet attention for their viral cover of Twenty One Pilots “Heathens”,  RIVALS have quickly made a name for themselves in the scene following their debut EP Haunted/Hunted. From touring alongside bands on the Vans Warped Tour to supporting tours with Story Untold and Best Kept Secret, the unique rock three-piece can stand successfully in the genre. Damned Soul is the band’s first full-length release, forwarding their musical career.

Damned Soul kicks off with high energy, as strong guitars open “Over It” indicating a much heavier intention that the 2015 debut.  Matching Kalie Wolf’s vocals, the album picks up the pace musically as the tracks continue. Some that should not be missed on your first listen include the title track “Damned Soul”, “Misery Memory” and the powerful closer “To: Leila”. Overall, Damned Soul cements itself as a unique record, incorporating influences of synth pop and heavy rock. Any fans of the modern rock genre and contemporary pop punk looking for something fun and entertaining this new year, check out this album.
