Album Review : Capital North – “Sea to Sky”

Capital North’s EP Sea to Sky is a record that has something for every kind of listener.  Musicians Jonathan Farrar (Guitar/Vocals) and Anthony Zichella (Vocals), Capital North hail from Pasadena, CA and was formed after Farrar traveled the world for a year on a mission of soul searching while Zichella went on to graduate culinary school and pursue his passion as a chef, but both found their way back to music. Together, the duo have created a 6-track EP that discusses relatable topics from personal struggles like health, love, and loss to the human condition.

Kicking off the record comes “Sea”, an easy instrumental track that seamlessly flows into the high tempo and energetic “Broken Vessel”. Highlight tracks include the mesmerizing and haunting “For A Living”, which includes a heavy dose of guitars, some hardcore themes in breakdowns and a lot in energy on the first half of the record. Next up comes “Glass Houses”, which gives me a lot of good vibes, as I am a HUGE fan of melodic and absolutely powerful vocals. The chorus brings out a perfect blend of the heavy guitars and the vocals, which just makes for a really amazing track to listen to and jam out.

Closing out the record comes “Household Wards”, which slows things down from the previous fast tempo of the EP. The meaningful lyrics melded with the softer guitars really highlights “Household Wars”, allowing the track to stand out on the record, and I believe this will become a fan favorite. The closer, “Sky” blends a lot of the same post-hardcore melodies, and adds that final punch to create a lasting impact.

Overall, Sea To Sky is a really cool record for those who enjoy the post-hardcore/alternative scene. For the fans of bands such as Hands Like Houses, Palisades and even Silverstein… check out what Capital North has to offer.

You won’t be disappointed.

ALBUM REVIEW : RIVALS – “Damned Soul”

With 2018 underway, many of us music fans are eagerly awaiting new releases from many artists to fill the new year. Alternative band RIVALS have just released their new EP through Smartpunk Records entitled, Damned Soul. The record has many musical masterminds behind the production, such as by John Espy (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus) and Aaron Edwards (Sick Puppies, Elohim, The Cab), with additional writing for drums and mixing/mastering by Cody Stewart (The Browning, Rings of Saturn, Falsifier).

Gaining popular internet attention for their viral cover of Twenty One Pilots “Heathens”,  RIVALS have quickly made a name for themselves in the scene following their debut EP Haunted/Hunted. From touring alongside bands on the Vans Warped Tour to supporting tours with Story Untold and Best Kept Secret, the unique rock three-piece can stand successfully in the genre. Damned Soul is the band’s first full-length release, forwarding their musical career.

Damned Soul kicks off with high energy, as strong guitars open “Over It” indicating a much heavier intention that the 2015 debut.  Matching Kalie Wolf’s vocals, the album picks up the pace musically as the tracks continue. Some that should not be missed on your first listen include the title track “Damned Soul”, “Misery Memory” and the powerful closer “To: Leila”. Overall, Damned Soul cements itself as a unique record, incorporating influences of synth pop and heavy rock. Any fans of the modern rock genre and contemporary pop punk looking for something fun and entertaining this new year, check out this album.

Pete Wentz to revive Decay Dance Records with PATD! Spencer Smith

If any of us grew up listening to the bands that defined the 2000-2010 decade, no one can forget the “Kings” of the era… Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco.  While the bands are still booming and as popular as ever today, there is always a little nostalgia to go back to the early days… when Pete Wentz signed a young Panic! At The Disco to his small indie label, Decay Dance.

Now, it seems a little bittersweet that this is coming full circle. Pete Wentz revived his label officially back in 2014, but not much work was done in signing new artists or bands. Wentz tweeted to his followers today the news and expanded on the growth and future of the label stating, “Decay Dance was always about finding like-minded creative people and magnifying their vision.”

Adding ex-PATD! member Spencer Smith was icing on the cake for many longtime fans of the label and the two musicians.

By relaunching the record label, both Wentz and Smith hope to give fellow artists the hope that they received. Smith responded to the partnership announcement with the nice sentiment stating via Twitter, “I am so excited to be back with the label that took a chance on me and my band years ago.”

Watch : Green Day “Still Breathing”

The monumental release of Green Day‘s 12th studio album, Revolution Radio took diehard fans for a ride, but the band isn’t done just yet. With a huge tour announced for North America, Green Day also released an emotional video for Revolution Radio and a popular fan favorite track, “Still Breathing”.

“Still Breathing” is heavily influenced by Billie Joe Armstrong’s own struggles from the frontman’s 2012/2013 stint in rehab for alcohol abuse and the isolation and lost feeling is heavily mirrored with the music video, setting an emotional tone right off the bat.  The video also showcases other people within the shots, sharing this overwhelming feeling of being lost, which is a very beautiful and creative way to develop the music video along with the emotional tones of the song.

The climax of the video shows fellow Green Day members, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, playing alone in a warehouse…just patiently waiting for their frontman to return.

(Not going to lie, I shed a few tears…Green Day fans it’s a tough one.)

Watch the emotional video for “Still Breathing” below the jump, and make sure to catch Green Day on tour now by purchasing tickets here or purchase Revolution Radio or any cd here!

Music and Media : Music Launch Summit

One of the biggest things I have been doing in the music industry recently has been learning to branch out. And some of that effort has been through working with other professionals in the industry and through various networking events like Music Launch Summit.

Palfreyman believes that as a community, people can learn from one another and through the Summit this can reach a huge impact. “Building a new music industry means working together, from all corners of the globe and industry,” explains Palfreyman. “I’ve been so lucky to attend stacks of music conferences around the globe and I wanted to create a place where anybody would have access to the knowledge, inspiration and connection to peers that have made such an impact in my own vision and career. That’s what the Music Launch Summit is.”

SPOTLIGHT : Bryan Howell and The Standalones

Showcasing artists in the scene is a huge part of this blog, and today we will dive into the story and inspiration behind musician and alt. rocker, Bryan Howell. Hailing originally from New York, the musician made the move to the big city of Nashville, TN for a chance at recognition and stardom in his music career. Being inspired by vintage rock and roll, Howell makes a name for himself through putting everything he has out into his music, which is displayed clearly in his new album entitled Take The Risk.

With a few singles released under the name Bryan Howell & The Standalones, this alternative rocker has a shot at making it into on-air radio, with the grit and guitars very reminiscent of many rock and alternative icons.  The track “Apologies And Promises” can appeal to almost any generation who just loves the classic rock and roll sound, while Howell’s other single, “Your Saturday Night” gives a faster-paced sound with the same classic grit many will enjoy. With Howell’s unique voice, “Your Saturday Night” makes it a great track to add to any alt. rock lover’s collection.

Listen to more of Bryan Howell & The Standalones via their Bandcamp here or keep updated via Facebook here, and make sure to check out the  music video for “Your Saturday Night” below the jump!
